Fun and Affordable Summer Activities To Beat Summer Boredom

Fun and Affordable Activities to Beat Summer Boredom

Need some inspiration this summer to avoid the dreaded, “Mom! I’m bored!” ? Read on for fun and affordable activities to entertain both you and your kids this summer.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Summer vacation. We start out with abundant energy, and so many ideas and plans. Then, mid-July hits. If you’re asked for one more snack, or hear the word “bored” one. more. time. you’re going to lose it. What’s a parent on a budget to do? I’ve collected a list of some ideas to help you make it to the first day of school without losing your mind… or blowing your budget on wine.

Your Local Library is Free AND Fun

Boy, I cannot express enough how underused this FREE resource is. It should go without saying that the books are the real star of the library. You can read them at the library with your children, or take them home with you. Many libraries host a reading time for toddlers and preschool-age children. I encourage you to check out the programming at your local library, as they are all different. Ours offers crafts, a play area, even a puzzle exchange! It is also an excellent opportunity to socialize your children (and yourself) during the sometimes lonely summer months.

Hit the Pool- Make it Affordable

Did you know that many pools offer discounted memberships halfway through the summer? This can save you hundreds of dollars and be a great way to stay cool and burn off some young energy. Pack some snacks and drinks (if permitted) to skip the snack line.

Fun in the Creek

I wasn’t introduced to the hobby of “creek walking” until adulthood. It seems strange, but hear me out. Not only is it great exercise, but it’s a wonderful way to stay cool. Encourage your kiddos to explore the wildlife and super cool rocks along the way. Obviously, safety first. Know your area and wear appropriate footwear to avoid bumps and scrapes. Don’t forget your bug spray!

Plan a Family Movie Night

Pop a bag of popcorn and pick a family friendly movie. Bonus points for an awesome living room fort to watch it in!

Take a Hike

Honestly, this is a money saving tip I have been using since high school. It’s a totally free date! My daughter went on her first baby carrier hike at 2 weeks old when I couldn’t wait any longer to get out of the house (not that I recommend this), but now that my kids are older it is a whole lot of fun to get them out in nature and get in some exercise while they are at it.

Plan a Play Date

Odds are good, you and your kids aren’t the only ones going stir-crazy. Contact your friends, or the parents of theirs, and get together!

Explore Free Community Resources and Activities

Many communities hold festivals that are totally free to you to attend, host street concerts, or art shows. We find this information in the local paper, library newsletter, and through local Facebook groups. Check them out and support your community!
